Solution
The City Water System adopts Inhand CDMA router solution for data collection and monitoring

Project Background:

      The City Water System has two levels of monitoring control devices. The first level is the controllers for each residential community and the second level is the central controller at the City Water data center. The central controller needs to collect and monitor the data from all first level controllers.
 Solution:
1) Network selection:
       The traditional water system uses the RF data transmitters to do the control data communication. Because the city has more and more taller buildings and more RF interference factors, the traditional communication system becomes less and less reliable. The city has an excellent CDMA network coverage and its data service supports the standard IP protocol and the bandwidth could be reach 60kbps. The CDMA data service cost is also suitable for this City Water control data application.
 
2) The communication device to connect the first level controller
        Inrouter310C, a CDMA wireless communication device that has network routering function, connects the first level controller. InRouter310 adopts the standard Ethernet protocols for network Router, meets the requirements of the two-way communication protocol of industrial PLC, introduces VPN technique to accomplish safe interconnection of remote networks and machine-to-machine data communication based on the standard TCP/IP protocols.

5) Network Construction:
(1) The first level controller is a standard Ethernet's PLC for data collection.
(2) The second level central controller runs the monitor software and uses ADSL to access the Internet. It has a Public Network IP and uses a general VPN Router or firewall to ensure the data safety.
(3) The first level controller accesses the Internet via InRouter 310C and set up safe connection with the central controller according to the central controller IP address.
(4) The central controller runs the monitor software and uses Modbus TCP protocol to communicate with the first level controllers namely the PLCs.
(5) The central controller can collect data from the first level controller PLCs and can maintain the software running on the PLCs, such as doing remote software upgrades. It reduces workload of on-site maintenance dramatically.
(6) Each InROUTER 310C is inserted with a UIM card issued by the CDMA operator.
 Functions and Features of Inhand CDMA Rounter:
1) Mobile data network connection: take the advantage of the CDMA data communication function to access the Internet.
2) VPN technology: take the advantage of the VPN technology based on IPSec standard, support CA certificate authentication, enables interconnection between networks of different areas. The interconnection and intercommunication with the mainstream products provided by Cisco or Huawei is available to ensure seamless VPN in industry domain.
3) Connection Management Technology: provides manageable connections, enable any part in the network to launch connection or disconnection according to users’ demand. Those functions include Connect on demand, auto-disconnect and manual activation to save network resources and cut down operating cost.
4) Auto Repair technology: the router checks the network connection automatically and repairs the connection to keep it always online
5) Data flow management technology: Since the limited bandwidth of mobile data communication, the data flow management technology is adopted to realize dynamic scheduling of data flow by dividing different priority levels, thus assure the bandwidth requirements of key applications and use the limited bandwidth efficiently.  
6) Embedded technology: the hardware platform of the system is a 32-bit embedded CPU with RTOS to provide powerful, stable and reliable processing performance.
 
4 Network advantage:
1) The system has kept the original industrial Ethernet network and the programs of central system. The only new thing is the CDMA mobile data carrying system.
2) The construction of the network is easy and safe, thus successfully connect the PLCs and the central controller.
3) The CDMA network operator provides industry users with reliable carrying network.
4) The implementation cycle is short, thus save the great workload of wiring in traditional network.
5) The communication cost is remarkably less than that of the traditional leased-line communication.
6) The combination of industry Ethernet’s PLC and wireless Router cuts down the remote maintenance workload of the whole system to its minimum.
